Sacroiliac Joint Pain During Pregnancy: 3 Releases For Relief

Your sacroiliac joints (SIJs) sit at the base of your spine and connect the spine to your pelvis. As you go about your daily life, load is transferred from the legs to the pelvis, through these joints and higher up into the body (and vice versa). You won’t find a lot of movement in your SIJs, but that doesn’t stop them from becoming a nuisance!

SIJ pain is typically felt on one side and the pain is generally quite pinpoint. During pregnancy, the relaxing of ligaments around the pelvis can make you more prone to developing SIJ pain. Aggravating activities may include getting up to stand from sitting, going up and down stairs, putting your pants on, and basically any movement that entails a load transfer onto one leg.

Far from being something you just have to ‘live with’, there are a few things you can do to help with the pain. As well as wearing a support belt and opting for workouts that avoid single-leg exercises, you may also find relief with 3 simple exercises which you’ll find in the below video.

There is healing in movement, especially the RIGHT kinds of movement, so why not give it a try? If nothing seems to be helping, I would highly recommend seeing a physiotherapist (preferably a pelvic physio if you’re pregnant), or a health professional who specialises in treating pre/postnatal conditions.

Good luck and happy releasing!
