Hamstrings are an anchor for the pelvis. If they’re not anchoring those sitbones from behind, the pelvis goes into free fall (okay slight exaggeration) and we get an anterior pelvic tilt with elongated hamstrings. Which feel tight.

This is also why stretching the hip flexors often doesn’t do much by itself to fix an anterior pelvic tilt. Maybe because it’s a consequence of the tilt, and not the primary cause.

Obviously this is not the case for everyone, especially if you don’t have an anterior tilt. Some people do just have stiff and tight hamstrings. However, if this exercise works for you, you may not be one of them!

As you can very clearly tell, sharing clinical knowledge is my forte, but ask me to talk about myself and the awkwardness ensues 😂 Just trying to keep it light over here. Kind of liking the adult onesie look right now. Thank you V for the push!

I couldn’t pass up commenting on this one 😂 A lot of flat booty complaints actually come down to hip and pelvis orientation, and whether your deep glutes are actually letting go.

Gripping glutes is such a common postural compensation which goes beyond just creating a pancake butt. It affects core strength, belly appearance, pelvic floor issues and back pain to name a few.

As a pelvic physio I actually work on this a lot with clients, although my go-to exercises look a little different lol. Something to try for your next workout perhaps? 🍑

And so after all of the ‘abnormal’ patterns, we finally get into what we actually want to see when someone breathes - at least when they’re breathing at rest.

I’ll say it again, looking at how someone breathes is a window into their muscle recruitment patterns. Are they predominantly using their back and neck muscles to stabilise? Are they actually using their diaphragm to breathe?

If you haven’t watched Parts 1 and 2, give them a look. I think they’re really interesting, if I do say so myself. And if you’re someone who trains other people in any physical capacity, this is going to be another tool in your kit that may make all the difference.

Only 3 days left to go! We start on Monday 💪🏽 Comment CHALLENGE and I’ll DM you the details to sign up.

This FREE Strong Enough to Mom challenge is all about realistic workouts that target the core, pelvic floor, posture and functional strength in a way that actually makes a difference to your daily life.

One of my big passions, if it wasn’t obvious enough already, is helping moms and equipping women with the knowledge and resources they need to feel fit and healthy. I run these free challenges because it’s become a really nice way to being together a whole bunch of women with similar aims. It’s so much better when you know you aren’t doing it all alone.

See you in 3 days!

Make sure you’ve watched part 1 - we’re following on here from a superficial breathing pattern.

And just to clarify, not all type A personalities are highly-strung with pelvic floor tension and jaw issues (before anyone comes at me lol). However, it is a breathing pattern I see a lot with chronic anxiety, OCD tendencies etc.

When you get into the nitty gritty and maybe, like me, find yourself analysing every breathing pattern you see - it becomes REALLY interesting. I think it’s useful in a lot situations, but particularly with neck pain, back pain, headaches and diastasis recti, as often a small shift in breathing can make a huge difference in symptoms.

Stay tuned for our final part 3 where we’ll actually get into ‘normal’ :)

21st Sep is just around the corner and that’s when it all kicks off 💪🏽 Comment CHALLENGE and I’ll DM you the link (it’s also in my bio)

Motherhood is a manual job. Lifting, carrying, bending, chasing. And as moms we often don’t get the time to train for it. But it doesn’t have to feel hard or painful. 5 days. 10min a day. Let me show you how to start changing things.

Signed: a physio, fitness professional and mom who’s been through it.

When I was at university, I remember watching lecturers do clinical assessments, and they would infer so much from seemingly nothing. And I was like HOW??

I’ve realised that it’s just something that comes with experience. I’ve gradually reached a stage where I can look at someone’s breath pattern, and (most of the time) know what I’m going to find before I even touch them, or take them through any loading.

Have you ever had someone who just cannot feel their abs? No matter what you do, it’s always ‘Yeah I feel it in my back. Or my hip flexors are on fire’. Have a look at their posture and breathing. It’s going to tell you a lot about how they’re strategising and what muscles they’re using instead of their abs.

*I tried really hard to fit this all in one video, but it was literally impossible. So sorry guys 😅 But there will be a part 2 and 3!

Anybody else remember that show Kids Say the Darnest Things? I think it’s also funny because eating has been a real journey with our kids. We’ll often say, ‘Wow you ate all your food! Look how big your belly is!’ And now they’re quite proud of showing off their big full bellies whenever they get the chance 😂
