It surprises people to know that there is a huge variety in what classifies as a normal bowel movement pattern. Anything from 3 times a day, to every 3 days, could be ‘normal’ for someone. 

Regardless, it’s something we do pretty frequently, and if our mechanics aren’t great, it can cause issues. For example, prolapse, haemorrhoids, anal fissures, pelvic floor dysfunction etc.

There’s a lot more that can be said, but I always go back to these three tips:

1. Knees higher than hips. This helps to relax the pelvic floor, and we NEED the pelvic floor to relax to open the butt hole.

2. Lean forward. This literally helps to create a nice straight ‘poop shoot’ for the poop to slide right on out.

3. Breathe! Often people go right to straining and pushing as hard as they can, but this can have the opposite effect of clamming things up. 
I often just suggest starting with some slow deep diaphragmatic breaths, and you might find that this naturally gets the poop moving through the rectum and out the back end. 
We can also use our inhales and exhales to coordinate with some gentle pushing to help get things out.

Diet and supplements and all that are also important, but for today I just want to leave you with this. Next time you’re on the loo, give it a try.

I see a LOT of pelvic girdle pain in clinic. I also had the pleasure of experiencing it through both of my pregnancies. There are a lot of different muscles involved, but the adductors tend to come in one way or another. In my experience, they’re often quite weak or very asymmetrical, or both. 

I don’t think adductors are a group that we often train with purpose. Glutes, quads, abs, back, upper body are the usual go-to’s. But they’re so super important for pelvis positioning, pelvic girdle stability, the pelvic floor etc. especially when we get to pregnancy. And sometimes, by the time we’re 26 weeks in and realising our adductors are not up to parr, it’s too late for high-load strengthening. 

So let’s call this exercise a prevention strategy. I’ll let you know how it pans out if I’m ever brave enough to have another kid 😂

True story. We had a guest over and my five year-old typically asks a lot of questions and is very social. Great, we can do that. 

She then proceeds, when the guest turns around, to utter the words, “You have a big butt!“. Very matter-of-fact and very innocent, but I felt my heart drop to my feet. Couldn’t help but laugh though.

I was chatting to one of my postpartum clients the other day and she was talking about how she literally feels like she has no core. And I remember that feeling so well!

The thing is, during pregnancy your baby actually helps you with core strength by providing intra-abdominal pressure. Once that pressure is removed, it’s like there’s nothing to hold you up. Imagine a milk sachet that is full. You could probably stand it up by itself. Now a half empty milk sachet? There’s no way that’s gonna stay upright. That’s why it takes so much time and effort to build back core strength postpartum.

This has been on my mind a lot lately. I’ve read so many posts and comments from women who are burned out. Who’ve lost themselves in the responsibility of raising their kids and nurturing a family. Maybe because society doesn’t reward mothers who prioritise themselves. 

Labelled as selfish for not breastfeeding. Looked at sideways for staying out late with friends or even simply putting effort into appearance. We ascribe virtue to sacrifice, even if it’s to our own detriment. Because a good mom puts her own needs aside for her kids. 

Maybe it’s the leftover remnants of a time when most women were at home while men remained breadwinners. A woman’s place was at home, and children and family were her job. Like my family. My mom took care of the home and us. And I think it gave her a lot of fulfilment to pour into us. 

I’m not against stay at home parents in any way. I just know that finding the balance between giving to your kids while not neglecting yourself can be a tricky one to find. And I don’t think it’s a struggle limited to just me. 

What’s the point of this? Maybe just to say you’re not alone. And to remind you that thinking about yourself and what you need in life is okay too.

This is what I got up to today. Went into clinic to have a workout, wasn’t feeling super motivated, so opened the app and went for this lower body super set. I’d forgotten I’d designed this routine to HIT the legs, but I soon remembered!

I often surprise myself when I go back and do my routines because, being on the other side, I’m like ‘Hey, this is an amazing workout. This person (this person being me) must really know their stuff’. Which I know is weird, but I often doubt myself, because trying to get this app off the ground has been SO hard. And so I psyche myself up thinking, ‘Well maybe my content is just not that good’. 

But it is. I’ve designed it to be well thought out, comprehensive and professional. It’s the culmination of a lot of time, knowledge and tons of passion, and even if it’s just me doing my own workouts 😂, today I’m quite proud of it all.

So recently I had someone come in with some prolapse issues. When we got around to looking at her pelvic floor contraction, what we discovered was, although she’d been diligently doing her Kegels, instead of creating a lift through the pelvic floor, she’d actually been bearing down. Something that is probably not the most helpful thing to do when we’re talking about prolapse. 

We had to spend a lot of time troubleshooting together and it took a few different tries and multiple cues in order for her to feel the difference between a pelvic floor lift, and bearing down. One is going to help create strength around the pelvic floor, and the other is just going to cause WAY too much pressure if done repetitively.

We ended up settling on this trick which I think worked really well. It’s also a great way to get some feedback if you’re not keen on having an internal assessment, or sticking a thumb into your own vagina.

One mantra I will always stick to is: it’s not about the exercise you’re doing it, it’s about HOW you’re doing it. And that’s why I often spend a lot of time really breaking movements down, because if you’re not doing something correctly, you may as well not do it at all. To a certain extent.

I reached a milestone last week. 40K subscribers on YouTube 🙌🏽 I’m consciously trying to be proud of this achievement, because honestly, it’s been 6 years and a long slog, and sometimes I feel like I should be doing better than I am. 

But as my husband likes to remind me, not a lot of creators get to this point. So I’m grateful that Belly Strong is still growing, and really happy to see how it’s changing things for your pregnancy and postpartum recovery journeys. 

I’ve been enjoying some rare tjme off for the past week, but I’ll be back with my usual Live workouts next Tuesday in the app ✨
