Prenatal massage Farnborough

Why You Need a Prenatal Massage

There are few things that change the body so much as pregnancy, and a lot of these changes affect the musculoskeletal system. That is, our muscles, joints and nerves. There are a few ways in which these structures can cause pain during pregnancy:

1. Pelvic Position

During pregnancy our centre of gravity shifts forward. This can cause the pelvis to tip forwards and the lower back to arch, leading to things like lower back pain, hip pain, sciatica or even neck pain.

2. Rib widening

As the baby gets bigger and pushes up into the ribcage, our ribs need to expand. Is that bra feeling tighter than usual? Or are you getting mid-back pain? This might be the reason.

3. Abdominal stretching

Your ab muscles need to stretch as the baby grows, but abs are also an important part of core stability. There is often a consequent weakening effect on the core leading to less support for the back and pelvis, which can further result in things like back pain, pelvic girdle pain or hip pain.

4. Foot changes

The arches of the feet can flatten during pregnancy, resulting in less foot support and a tight feeling while wearing shoes. This, combined with swelling which can come on later during pregnancy, can cause foot pain. And because everything is connected, this can affect structures higher up!

So, aches and pains are extremely common during pregnancy…

But note, I use the word common, NOT ‘normal’! It is never normal to be in pain, and there are tons of things we can do to help with this. One of those things is pregnancy massage. There are a number of benefits when it comes to prenatal massage:

Treat muscular pain

Due to all of the changes mentioned above, specific muscles will often get really TIGHT. This can contribute towards pain. Prenatal massage aims to relieve this tension to provide some relief.

Relieve pressure on the nerves

The sciatic nerve is commonly irritated by the weight of the baby, but also by surrounding tissue tension. By reducing the latter, we can decreased the pressure on the nerves exiting the pelvis.

Improve circulation

By using mechanical pressure to move swelling upwards, we can improve blood flow and reduce swelling in the feet and legs.

Restore function

When muscles are happy they work better. Are you struggling to walk; get out of bed; or climb up stairs? This can often be due to muscle imbalances or tightness. Massage can help with muscle balance, and help get you moving better without pain.

Reduce stress and assist with labour

Let’s be honest, being pregnant can be stressful – physically , mentally and emotionally! Mechanical input to the tissues through massage can help calm down the nervous system and aid in relaxation. This can even help with labour as how stressed/relaxed you are going into labour can have an effect on delivery.
